CTP Plates and Platesetters for Printers in Africa

By , Sales Manager, CTPPress

Last updated: October 2026

Quick answer: In Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania we supply thermal CTP plates made in our factory, and CTP platesetters supplied with our partner factories. A Ghanaian dealer buys double-layer thermal plates and runs a platesetter bought through us; a Kenyan dealer buys thermal plates; a Tanzanian printing company images plates for its own presses and for other local printers.

Key takeaways

  • Three customer models: plate dealer, dealer with his own platesetter, and printer doing trade plate-making.
  • Thermal CTP plates (single- and double-layer) are our own production; platesetters come from partner factories.
  • Buying plates and the platesetter from one source keeps grade, exposure and processing matched.
  • Installation is by an engineer on site or remote video guidance, confirmed in the quotation.

In many African towns a printer has no plate-making bureau nearby, and the local dealer may be the main source of plates. That changes the buying question. It is not only “which plate?” but “who images the plate, and can I build a small business around it?” Our customers in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania answered that question in three different ways, and this page explains each one. For the full list of countries we supply, see the printing plate export markets overview.

Who we supply in Ghana, Kenya and Tanzania

Customers stay anonymous; only owner-confirmed facts are listed.

Country Customer type What they buy How they use it
Ghana Dealer Double-layer thermal CTP plates (steady volume) and a CTP platesetter supplied through us Uses the platesetter himself and sells plates to local printers
Kenya Dealer Thermal CTP plates Resells to printing houses
Tanzania Printing company CTP platesetter supplied through us Makes plates for its own presses and outputs plates for other local printers

Thermal CTP plates for African dealers and printers

We manufacture our thermal CTP plates in our own factory. They image at 830 nm on any thermal platesetter and are developed in a standard processor. Two grades matter most for this region:

Is double-layer worth the extra cost? For a dealer, it depends on who buys from him. Packaging and label printers, or anyone using UV inks, will value it; a small commercial shop on short runs usually will not. A dealer can stock both and let the job decide. Run length figures belong in the grade TDS with its test conditions, not in a sales headline.

Platesetters and trade plate-making

Two of our African customers bought a CTP platesetter through us. Our platesetters are supplied with our partner factories, and we help match the machine to the plate grade you plan to run. Owning a platesetter changes the business model:

  1. In-house imaging: the Tanzanian printer images plates for its own presses, so jobs no longer wait for an outside bureau.
  2. Trade plate-making: spare capacity is sold as imaged plates to nearby printers who have no platesetter of their own. The Tanzanian printer and the Ghanaian dealer both do this.
  3. Locked-in plate demand: every plate imaged is a plate bought, which gives the dealer a steady, predictable thermal plate order.

A trade plate-making line needs more than the platesetter: a plate processor matched to the plate, a plate punch if presses need pin registration, and, for long runs, a plate baking oven. Processors, ovens and punches are our own production. Our punches are pneumatic, so plan compressed air. Choosing the format (4-up or 8-up) and automation level is covered in the CTP machine selection guide, and the thermal CTP platesetter page lists the options. Bureaus selling plates to others may also find solutions for prepress service bureaus useful.

Packing Interleaved plates in cartons on pallets or wooden cases, sea freight in containers to your nearest port Shipping and packaging

A platesetter, processor and plates can travel in one shipment, together with developer and gum; mixed loads, Incoterms and lead time are confirmed in the quotation. In hot, humid climates, keep plate cartons sealed, flat and off the floor in a shaded store, and use older stock first; the plate storage guide explains why.

Installation, support and trial plates

Machines far from the factory raise a fair question: who installs it? For export, installation is by an engineer on site or by remote video guidance with manuals, confirmed in the quotation. Prepare the site first with the machine installation checklist (power, earthing, temperature, humidity, dust and space). After start-up, our technical support team helps remotely with exposure, processing and plate questions. If you already run a platesetter, request trial plates and test them with the plate test protocol before a full order.

Nigeria and the CTcP market

Nigeria works differently: our customer there is a dealer buying single-layer CTcP plates for UV platesetters, mainly in the local Kord size. That market has its own page: CTcP plate supply for Nigeria.

FAQ

Where can African printers buy CTP plates?

Through local dealers or directly from a manufacturer. We supply dealers and printing companies in Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Nigeria with plates from our own factory, shipped by sea in containers.

Should a plate dealer in Africa also sell a CTP platesetter?

It can help. Our Ghanaian dealer runs a platesetter bought through us and sells imaged plates to local printers, which keeps his thermal plate demand steady. Platesetters are supplied with our partner factories.

Is double-layer thermal plate worth the extra cost?

For long runs, aggressive press chemistry or UV inks after baking, yes. For short commercial runs with conventional inks, a single-layer thermal plate is usually enough.

Can a printing company make plates for other printers?

Yes. Our Tanzanian customer images plates for its own presses and outputs plates for other local printers. It needs a platesetter, a matched processor and, if required, a punch.

How do you store CTP plates in a hot humid climate?

Keep cartons sealed, flat and off the floor in a shaded, dry store, avoid heat sources, and use older stock first. Our plate storage guide gives the full checklist.
