Printing Plates by Application
Last updated: October 2026
Quick answer: The right printing plate depends on the process, not only the press size. Commercial, magazine, book and newspaper work runs on offset plates (thermal, processless, CTcP, violet or PS). Labels, flexible packaging and corrugated boxes run mostly on flexo plates. Folding cartons and metal decorating are usually offset with UV-resistant, baked plates. Pick your application below.
Key takeaways
- We manufacture both offset and flexo plates, so one supplier can cover publication and packaging work.
- Printing process, ink type, substrate and run length decide which plate grade fits.
- Each application page lists recommended grades, matching equipment and what to send for a quote.
- Where a process is not ours (for example gravure cylinders), the page says so plainly.
Buyers often tell us there are too many plate types to compare, and that a supplier does not understand their press. This hub is our answer: ten application pages, each written around one printing process, its plate pain points and the grades we would actually recommend. Many printers also want one supplier for offset and flexo plates; because our factory makes both, a single quotation can cover a mixed plant. If you are planning the whole platemaking room rather than one plate, see our prepress solutions by buyer and press type.
Printing plates for every application
The table gives a one-line summary of every application page and the main plate family behind it.
| Application | Main process | One-line summary |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial offset printing | Sheetfed offset | Brochures, flyers and stationery: thermal, processless and CTcP plates for many short and medium jobs a day. |
| Magazine and catalog printing | Heat-set web + sheetfed | Coated-paper publications with tight colour across signatures: thermal plates, bent and punched for web units. |
| Book printing | Sheetfed and web offset | Black text on uncoated paper and colour covers: CTcP, thermal, positive PS and polyester plates for cost per title. |
| Newspaper printing | Cold-set web offset | Nightly deadlines on newsprint: violet photopolymer, thermal (incl. processless) and CTcP aluminum plates. |
| Folding carton printing | Sheetfed offset (UV) | Cartons on board with UV inks and coatings: double-layer thermal plates that can be baked. |
| Label printing | Narrow-web flexo | Self-adhesive and wrap-around labels: thin digital and analog flexo plates for fine detail. |
| Flexible packaging | Wide-web flexo | Films and laminates with solvent or water-based inks: digital flexo plates; gravure cylinders are not supplied. |
| Corrugated printing | Post-print flexo, preprint | Box printing on fluted board: thick, soft flexo plates for post-print and thinner plates for preprint. |
| Paper bag and cup printing | Flexo and offset | Bags, cups and wrapping paper with water-based inks: flexo plates, plus offset plates for cup blanks. |
| Metal decorating | Offset on tinplate | Cans and closures printed with UV inks: baked, UV-ink-resistant thermal plates. |
Publication and commercial printing applications
Publication work is printed offset on aluminium plates. What differs is the press and the deadline:
- Commercial printing means many short jobs on sheetfed presses, so fast makeready and clean plates matter most.
- Magazines and catalogs combine heat-set web for inside pages with sheetfed covers; colour consistency across hundreds of plates is the main concern.
- Books are dominated by black text on uncoated paper, where plate cost per title and sharp type count.
- Newspapers run cold-set web offset on newsprint against a nightly deadline, so plate output speed and bending accuracy come first.
The core grades for these applications are on our thermal CTP plates, CTcP plates and violet CTP plates pages.
Packaging printing applications
Packaging splits between offset and flexo. Folding cartons and metal decorating are usually offset with UV inks, so they need a UV-ink resistant plate such as our double-layer thermal grade, usually baked. Labels, flexible packaging, corrugated boxes and paper bags lean on flexo, where plate thickness, hardness and imaging method matter more than the plate base. Our flexo plate range covers analog, digital LAMS, water-wash, thermal-processing and corrugated grades.
How to choose a plate for your application
- Confirm the process and press. Sheetfed, heat-set web, cold-set web, narrow-web or wide-web flexo, plus the plate size and gauge.
- Check your imaging device. Thermal platesetters image at 830 nm; UV platesetters need CTcP plates; violet units need violet plates; analog workflows need PS plates or analog flexo. Our CTP compatibility guide helps here.
- List inks and coatings. UV, hybrid and some solvent-based inks call for a more resistant grade such as our double-layer thermal plate, often baked; single-layer thermal and CTcP plates are not UV-ink resistant.
- Estimate run length and job mix. The grade TDS states run-length test conditions; we do not quote a single number for every press.
- Trial before switching. Ask for trial plates and follow our plate test protocol.

Offset or flexo: which process is your job?
A common belief is that packaging printing always means flexo. In practice folding cartons and metal decorating are often printed offset, while labels, flexible packaging and corrugated lean on flexo. Many buyers also assume any plate works as long as the size fits the press; in fact the printing process, ink, substrate and run length decide which plate grade fits. A quick split:
- Offset printing plates: flat sheets or web presses, fine screens, paper, board or tinplate.
- Flexo plates: reel-fed presses, films, labels, fluted board and paper bags.
- Both in one plant: common in packaging groups; one quotation can cover both.
Worried that changing plate type will disturb production? We give a clear recommendation before you order, and trial plates let you test on one press first.
FAQ
Which printing plate is used for which printing process?
Offset processes (commercial, magazine, book, newspaper, carton, metal decorating) use aluminium offset plates such as thermal, processless, CTcP, violet or PS. Flexo processes (labels, flexible packaging, corrugated, many paper bags) use photopolymer flexo plates. The application pages above match each process to specific grades.
Is offset or flexo better for packaging printing?
Neither is better in general. Offset suits folding cartons and metal decorating with fine images on flat sheets; flexo suits labels, films, corrugated board and paper bags printed from reels or on uneven substrates. The packaging format and run decide.
What plates are used for newspaper printing?
Newspapers print cold-set web offset on aluminium plates. Violet photopolymer, thermal (including processless) and CTcP plates are all used; the platesetter already installed usually decides the grade. See our newspaper printing page for details.
What printing plates are used for labels and flexible packaging?
Both mainly use flexo plates: thinner digital or analog plates for narrow-web labels, and digital flexo plates for wide-web films. We do not supply gravure cylinders for flexible packaging.
Can one supplier provide offset and flexo plates?
Yes. We manufacture offset plates and flexo plates in our own factory, and supply platesetters and flexo imagers with our partner factories, so one quotation can cover a plant running both processes.
