Label Printing Plates: Flexo and Offset Plates for Self-Adhesive and Wet Glue Labels

By , Sales Manager, CTPPress

Last updated: October 2026

Quick answer: Self-adhesive labels are mostly printed on narrow-web flexo presses using photopolymer plates — digital LAMS plates for fine screens, analog, water-wash or thermal-processing plates for line and solid work — usually in 1.14 mm gauge. Wet glue labels for bottles and cans are mainly printed by sheetfed offset with thermal CTP or CTcP plates.

Key takeaways

  • Label work means many short jobs, so plate turnaround and plate cost per job matter as much as print quality.
  • Pick the flexo plate type by artwork (fine screens vs line work) and by how you want to process plates.
  • Water-wash and thermal-processing plates let smaller label shops make plates without a solvent washout line.
  • Wet glue labels are an offset job: use thermal or CTcP plates, and a bakeable grade for long UV runs on metallised paper.

A label converter may run dozens of different jobs in a week: wine and spirits labels, pharmaceutical labels with tiny text, food labels with barcodes, cosmetics labels on clear film. Each job is short, the artwork is detailed, and the customer reorders the same label months later expecting an identical result. That pattern shapes the choice of label printing plates more than any other factor.

How labels are printed: narrow-web flexo and sheetfed offset

Narrow-web flexo is the main process for the self-adhesive label: reel-fed presses, typically up to around half a metre wide, printing on paper or film facestock with UV inks or water-based inks, followed by inline die-cutting and matrix stripping. Plates are mounted with tape on print cylinders or sleeves. In the industry, 1.14 mm is the most common gauge for narrow web flexo plates, with 1.70 mm used on some presses and for heavier solids.

Sheetfed offset remains the standard for wet glue labels — beer, soft drinks, canned food, mineral water — printed on label paper or metallised paper in large sheets, then cut and stacked. These jobs use aluminium offset plates for labels, the same families as commercial printing but often with UV inks.

Some narrow-web offset and hybrid label presses also exist; they use their own plate formats, so send us the plate size and gauge from your press manual.

Plate problems label converters face

Recommended label printing plates by job

Job need Recommended plate type Why
Fine screens, vignettes, process-colour labels on film Digital LAMS flexo plates, 1.14 mm Laser-ablated mask gives sharp, consistent small dots and clean barcodes
Line work, text and solids, simple spot-colour labels Analog flexo plates Lower plate cost, film-negative exposure; fine for line and solid jobs
Small or mid-size label shop making plates in-house without solvent Water-wash flexo plates Washout with water-based solution instead of solvent; simpler plate room; not for UV inks
Fast turnaround, many short jobs per day Thermal-processing flexo plates Dry thermal development, no solvent drying time; plates ready sooner
Wet glue labels on sheetfed offset Thermal CTP plates or CTcP plates Standard offset plates; bakeable double-layer thermal grade for long UV runs

All the plates above are produced in our factory. Ink compatibility — UV, water-based or solvent — is listed on each grade TDS; tell us your ink system before we recommend a plate.

About the belief that digital plates are only for big label converters: in practice the plate type should follow the artwork and ink. Digital flexo plates for labels pay off whenever the job has fine screens, vignettes or small text; analog or water-wash plates are often the economical choice for line and solid work. Many shops run both. The usual objection — “digital plates are too expensive for small jobs” — is fair for a two-colour text label, and that is exactly where an analog plate makes sense.

Making flexo plates in a label shop: solvent, water-wash or thermal

Many label printers believe solvent processing is the only way to make flexo plates, and that they are too small for a plate making line. That is no longer true: water-wash and thermal-processing plates let a small label shop make plates without a solvent washout line, solvent recovery or long drying times.

  1. Imaging: digital plates are imaged on a flexo CTP imager; analog plates are exposed through a film negative.
  2. Exposure: back and main UV exposure in an exposure unit.
  3. Washout: solvent, water-wash or thermal development depending on plate type.
  4. Drying and finishing: drying (for solvent and water-wash plates), then post-exposure and light finishing.

Flexo imagers and plate making machines — exposure, washout and drying units — are supplied with our partner factories and matched to the plate type you choose. See flexo plate processors for configurations and our flexo plate making process article for the full workflow.

On UV inks: our water-wash flexo plates are not suitable for UV inks, so label shops printing with UV should choose another plate type from our flexo range — tell us your press and ink and we recommend the grade.

Offset plates for wet glue labels

Wet glue labels are printed in large sheets, often with metallic inks or on metallised paper, then varnished. For these jobs:

Thermal platesetters for offset plates are supplied with our partner factories; plate processors and developer come from our own factory.

What to send for a label plate quote

  1. Process: narrow-web flexo, sheetfed offset or both; press width and repeat.
  2. For flexo: plate gauge, ink system (UV, water-based, solvent), and how you process plates today.
  3. For offset: plate size, gauge, platesetter type (830 nm thermal or UV CTcP), ink system.
  4. Typical jobs per week and plate consumption.

MOQ, price and lead time are confirmed in the quotation.

FAQ

What plates are used for label printing?

Self-adhesive labels are mainly printed with photopolymer flexo plates on narrow-web presses — digital, analog, water-wash or thermal-processing types. Wet glue labels are printed by sheetfed offset with aluminium thermal CTP or CTcP plates.

What thickness of flexo plate is used for narrow web labels?

Typical in the industry, 1.14 mm is the most common gauge for narrow-web label presses, with 1.70 mm on some presses. Use the gauge your press and mounting tape are set up for.

Are digital or analog flexo plates better for labels?

Digital plates are better for fine screens, vignettes, small text and barcodes. Analog plates are an economical choice for line work and solids. Many label shops use both, choosing per job.

Can water-wash flexo plates run UV inks?

No. Our water-wash flexo plates are not suitable for UV inks. For UV-ink labels, tell us your press and ink and we recommend another plate type from our flexo range.

Are wet glue labels printed with offset plates?

Yes. Most wet glue labels are printed by sheetfed offset with thermal CTP or CTcP plates. For long UV runs on metallised paper, a bakeable double-layer thermal plate is the safer choice.
