Printing Plate Storage Guide

By , Sales Manager, CTPPress

Last updated: October 2026

Quick answer: Store unprocessed printing plates flat, in their sealed cartons with interleaf, off the floor, in a cool, dry room away from direct sunlight and heat. Open CTcP, PS and violet plates only under the right safelight. Rotate stock first in, first out and use plates within the shelf life given in the grade TDS. Let cartons reach room temperature before opening to avoid condensation.

Key takeaways

  • The aluminium is robust; the coating is not. Heat, humidity and light age it before it ever reaches the platesetter.
  • Keep plates flat, boxed and interleaved until loading; most scratches happen in handling, not in transit.
  • Light rules differ by plate type: thermal tolerates room light, CTcP, PS and violet plates need safelight.
  • FIFO rotation and batch labels prevent old stock from causing toning or speed drift.
  • Flexo plates follow similar principles with their own UV and ozone sensitivities.

A plate that leaves our factory in perfect condition can still print badly if it spends months in a hot, humid warehouse. This guide covers how to store printing plates for offset work (thermal CTP, CTcP and PS plates) and gives a short section on flexo plates. It is practical guidance for warehouse teams, prepress managers and consumables dealers who hold stock.

Why plate storage matters

Many buyers think plates are aluminium, so they last forever. The base does; the light- or heat-sensitive coating on it does not. Good CTP plate storage decides whether a plate prints like the day it was made. Poor storage typically shows up as:

Most of these look like plate defects on press. Our CTP plate troubleshooting guide helps separate storage causes from processing causes.

Temperature and humidity

Heat speeds up chemical ageing of the coating; humidity encourages oxidation and can make the coating and interleaf stick. Typical in the industry, plate data sheets ask for storage at normal room temperature, roughly 15 to 25 °C, with relative humidity below about 60%, away from heat sources. Your plate’s own storage temperature and humidity limits are in the grade TDS, and the TDS always governs.

Risk What happens What to do
Hot warehouse or roof store Coating ages faster; speed and background change Store on the cooler side of the building, away from roofs and walls in the sun
High humidity Oxidation, sticking interleaf, uneven development Keep cartons sealed; use dehumidifiers in humid seasons
Cold carton opened in warm room Condensation on the coating Let cartons reach room temperature before opening
Heaters, dryers, compressors nearby Local hot spots on the stack Keep plates well clear of heat sources

If you have no air-conditioned store, choose the coolest, shadiest dry area you have, keep cartons sealed, and buy in quantities you will use within a short cycle. In hot climates, the riskiest period is often transit: a container that sat in the port in the heat should be unloaded promptly and the cartons allowed to settle before opening. See how we pack for export on our shipping and packaging page.

Light: what each plate type tolerates

Stacking, cartons and interleaf

Plates are flat, thin and easily dented. Most damage happens in the warehouse and the plate room, not in the container.

  1. Store cartons flat on pallets, off the floor and away from walls; never stand them on edge.
  2. Stack cartons no higher than the limit marked on the packaging, and never put other goods on top.
  3. Keep the interleaf paper between plates until loading. It protects the coating from scratches and from contact with the back of the next plate.
  4. Lift plates by the edges, large formats with two people, and never slide one plate across another.
  5. Reseal opened packs with their moisture barrier and return them to the carton.

FIFO stock rotation and shelf life

Rotate stock first in, first out. Label each pallet with its arrival date and batch number, place new deliveries behind existing stock, and record which batch goes to which press. This gives a simple storage rule for the warehouse team and lets you trace any problem to a batch. We do not quote a single shelf life figure here because it differs by plate type and grade: see the grade TDS for the shelf life and the storage conditions it assumes. Dealers holding stock for several customers should size orders to that window.

Some warehouse managers feel storage rules slow down the warehouse. In practice, FIFO and batch labels take minutes per delivery and save remakes later.

Storing processed plates for reprints

Processed plates kept for repeat jobs need different care. Gum them evenly and let the gum dry, then store them hanging or in slotted racks so the image faces are not touching. Keep them out of sunlight and away from solvent fumes. Before reuse, clean off old ink and re-gum. Processed plates that were baked keep better on press but still need protection from scratches.

Storing flexo plates

Unexposed flexo plates follow the same principles: flat in their original boxes with the protective film on, cool, dry and away from UV light and heat. Processed flexo plates must be cleaned and dried, then stored flat or hung, away from light and ozone sources such as electric motors, which can crack photopolymer. For cleaning and storage detail, read our guide on flexo plate cleaning and storage, and browse our flexo plates.

Plate storage checklist

Check Offset plates (CTP, CTcP, PS) Flexo plates
Position Flat, on pallets, off floor Flat in box; processed plates flat or hung
Climate Cool, dry, stable; within grade TDS limits Cool, dry, away from heat
Light Thermal: room light; CTcP, PS, violet: safelight Away from UV and daylight
Protection Interleaf in place until loading Protective film on until exposure
Rotation FIFO by batch; shelf life per TDS FIFO by batch; shelf life per TDS

If you follow these rules you get plates that print the same on the last box as the first, and no surprises when you open a carton. For terms used on this page, see our CTP glossary; for help with a specific storage problem, contact our technical support team.

FAQ

How should CTP plates be stored?

Flat, in sealed cartons with interleaf, on pallets off the floor, in a cool, dry room away from sunlight and heat sources. Rotate stock first in, first out.

What is the right storage temperature for printing plates?

Typical industry guidance is normal room temperature, roughly 15 to 25 °C, kept stable. The limits for your plate are in the grade TDS, which governs.

What humidity should printing plates be stored at?

Dry: typically relative humidity below about 60%. Keep cartons sealed in humid seasons and let cold cartons reach room temperature before opening to prevent condensation.

Do CTcP and PS plates need a safelight room?

Yes. They are UV-sensitive, so open and load them only under a UV-filtered yellow safelight. Thermal plates can be handled in normal room light.

How long can printing plates be stored?

It depends on the plate type and grade. See the shelf life and storage conditions in the grade TDS, and use stock first in, first out.

How should flexo plates be stored?

Unexposed flexo plates flat in their boxes with protective film, cool and away from UV light. Processed plates clean, dry, stored flat or hung away from light and ozone.
