Polyester Printing Plates — Polyester and Paper-Base Offset Plates for Short Runs
Last updated: October 2026
Quick answer: A polyester printing plate is an offset plate built on a polyester film base instead of aluminium. It is usually imaged with a laser printer or a small-format plate imager and run on small offset and duplicator presses. Polyester plates are economical for short one- and two-colour jobs, but long runs, tight multicolour register and fine screens still need aluminium CTP plates.
Key takeaways
- Polyester and paper-base plates let small printers make plates in-house without a CTP line or processor.
- They fit small offset and duplicator presses and are supplied punched for the press clamp.
- Polyester has better dimensional stability and run length than paper, but both are below aluminium.
- We manufacture polyester and paper-base offset plates in our own factory; sizes and punching are confirmed in the quotation.
Many quick printers and in-plant print rooms tell us the same thing: aluminium plates are too costly for small jobs, and a small offset press does not justify a CTP line. A polyester printing plate solves that for the right work. You can make plates in-house with a laser printer and run cheap plates for quick one-colour jobs — forms, letterheads, envelopes, tickets, simple flyers. This page explains how polyester plates work and, just as important, where they stop being the right choice.
What is a polyester printing plate?
A polyester offset plate uses a thin, tough polyester (PET) film as its base. The surface carries a hydrophilic, ink-repellent coating that holds water. The image is formed by an oleophilic material — toner from a laser printer, or an imaged layer on platesetter-type grades — that accepts ink. On press it works on the same water-and-ink principle as any offset plate.
Paper-base plates follow the same idea on a treated paper base. They cost less but are less stable and are meant for the shortest, simplest jobs.
Polyester vs paper-base vs aluminium plates
The belief that every offset job needs an aluminium plate is expensive for small shops. Polyester plates are the economical choice for short one- and two-colour runs on small offset presses. The table compares the three bases in general terms; grade values are on the TDS.
| Factor | Paper-base plate | Polyester plate | Aluminium CTP / PS plate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical press | Duplicator, small offset | Small offset, duplicator | All sheetfed and web presses |
| Imaging | Laser printer or direct image | Laser printer or small-format imager | Thermal, UV (CTcP) or violet platesetter; PS by film exposure |
| Processor needed | No | No for laser-printer grades | Yes, except processless grades |
| Dimensional stability | Lowest | Moderate | High |
| Run length | Shortest | Short | Medium to long, per grade TDS |
| Best for | Single-colour text jobs | One- and two-colour short runs | Multicolour, halftones, long runs |
If your work is moving toward colour and longer runs, compare our aluminium CTP plates and positive PS plates.
How polyester plates are imaged and run
- Output — print the page to the plate on a laser printer set up for plate output (or image it on a compatible small-format imager). Use the toner and fuser settings recommended in the grade TDS.
- Fuse check — the toner must be fully fused; weakly fused toner wears off early on press.
- Mounting — clamp the pre-punched plate on the duplicator or small offset press.
- Etch or wet — wipe the plate with the recommended plate etch or start with fountain solution to wet the non-image area.
- Run — bring up ink, check density and run the job. Keep water balance on the lean side; polyester plates do not like excess water.

Honest limits of polyester plates
Polyester plates cannot replace aluminium on every job. Long runs, tight multicolour register and fine screens still need aluminium CTP plates. Buyers’ common objections are fair:
- “Polyester plates do not last long on press.” True compared with aluminium — they are designed for short runs. The run length for each grade is stated on its TDS under defined test conditions.
- “Fine screens and halftones look weak.” Laser-printer output limits fine halftones; polyester plates are best for text, line work and coarse screens.
- “Paper plates stretch and lose register.” Paper-base plates do move with humidity and press tension, and polyester moves less but more than aluminium. When registration drifts on long multicolour jobs, aluminium is the answer.
- Plates are not baked and are not intended for UV inks unless the TDS says so.
Ordering polyester and paper-base plates
We manufacture polyester and paper-base offset plates in our own factory, alongside our aluminium plate lines, so dealers can source small-offset and CTP plates from one supplier. Plates are cut and punched for common small offset and duplicator presses and packed to protect the surface in transit. Dealers can ask about private-label OEM plates or our dealer programme. For a broader view of plate technologies, read our guide to the types of CTP plates.
To quote, send the press model, plate size and punching, imaging method (laser printer model or imager), typical run length and monthly quantity. MOQ, lead time and price are confirmed in the quotation.
FAQ
What is a polyester printing plate?
It is an offset plate on a polyester film base instead of aluminium, usually imaged with a laser printer and run on small offset and duplicator presses for short jobs.
How do you image a polyester plate with a laser printer?
Print the page directly onto the plate with a laser printer set for plate output, using the toner and fuser settings in the grade TDS. The fused toner forms the ink-receptive image; make sure it is fully fused before mounting.
How long does a polyester plate last on press?
Polyester plates are designed for short runs and last longer than paper-base plates but well short of aluminium. The run length of each grade is stated on its TDS and depends on toner fusing, ink, paper and press setup.
What is the difference between polyester and paper offset plates?
Polyester plates use a film base with better dimensional stability and durability; paper offset plates cost less but stretch more and suit only the shortest single-colour jobs.
Can polyester plates be used for multicolour printing?
Simple two-colour work with loose register is possible. For tight multicolour register, process colour and fine halftones, aluminium CTP plates are the better choice.
