Printing Plate Cost Calculator

Quick answer: Cost per good impression = (plate price × (1 + remake rate) + processing cost) ÷ impressions the plate delivers. Plate price is usually quoted per square metre or per plate, so start with plate area = width × length, then multiply by plates per month. The interactive calculator tool is being added to this page; meanwhile the worked example below gives you the method. For real plate prices: request a quote.

Key takeaways

  • Plate area (m²) = width (m) × length (m); monthly plate area = plate area × plates per month.
  • Compare plates on cost per good impression, not on price per plate.
  • Remakes and press downtime are usually the hidden cost — a cheap plate that fails mid-job costs twice.
  • A calculator frames the numbers; the quotation confirms them.

“Cheap plates cost me reprints” — we hear this from printing-house purchasing managers in every market. What buyers really want is a real cost per impression number they can compare across suppliers and grades. This page gives you the method so you can do the arithmetic yourself.

The formula

Three inputs decide the real number. Plate price: quoted per size and grade (or per square metre). Run length: impressions the plate survives on your press with your ink and paper — this is where grades differ, and where baking extends the divisor. Remakes: every failed plate adds its full cost again plus press downtime.

Step Calculation Where the input comes from
1. Plate area width (m) × length (m) Your press plate size — see the plate size chart
2. Monthly plate area plate area × plates per month Your job planning records
3. Plate cost per plate plate area × price per m² Your quotation
4. Effective plate cost plate cost × (1 + remake rate) + processing cost Your remake log; developer and energy use
5. Cost per good impression effective plate cost ÷ impressions delivered Your job length, if the plate survives the whole job

A worked example

Take a common sheetfed plate size of 1030 × 790 mm. Plate area = 1.03 × 0.79 = 0.8137 m². At 400 plates per month, monthly plate area = 0.8137 × 400 = 325.5 m². Call the quoted price per square metre P (fill in your own quote). One plate then costs 0.8137 × P.

Assume, for illustration, a job of 20,000 impressions and a 3% remake rate. Effective plate cost = 0.8137 × P × 1.03 = 0.838 × P per plate, or 0.042 × P per 1,000 good impressions (before processing cost).

Now compare a plate priced 20% lower (0.8 × P per m²) that does not survive the job and has to be replaced mid-run: two plates are used, so the cost is 2 × 0.8137 × 0.8 × P = 1.30 × P — about 55% more than the dearer plate, before counting press stops and wasted sheets. This is why we always compare plates on cost per good impression, and why trial plates precede volume orders.

What to send for a quotation

Some buyers expect calculator output to replace quotes. It does not: the calculator frames the numbers you confirm in the quote. Send us plate sizes, gauge, grade (or your current plate type), plates per month, ink system and destination port, and we will run the comparison on real quoted numbers — request a quote or contact us. Prices, MOQ and lead time are confirmed in the quotation.

Disclaimer: the example uses illustrative values for reference only; real inputs are subject to your quotation and the grade TDS.
